Dr. Álvaro Ferro – Escultor de Narices

Rhinoplasty and Physical Appearance

One of the most important functions of the face is to present ourselves and recognize our shared humanity. Located right in the center, the nose has a significant impact on our facial features and is a distinctive human characteristic, setting us apart from chimpanzees and gorillas. Along with other traits like an upright posture and opposable thumbs, the nose contributes to what makes us uniquely human. The size and shape of our noses communicate a great deal about us to others.

There are small, large, thin, bulbous, straight, and crooked noses. Being in the center of the face, the nose faces challenges throughout life, such as bumps or infections, and it also reflects the use of our chewing muscles. The shape and size of the nose can heavily influence the impression others form of us. For example, a small nose might convey a sense of meekness, while a large one can give an air of generosity or toughness. Aquiline noses give a hawk-like appearance, and certain nose shapes can often be associated with specific stereotypes.

When a person considers cosmetic nose surgery, their perspective completely shifts. They begin to observe themselves from different angles and generally develop a clearer idea of their perceived flaws. However, what they deem important does not always align with the surgeon’s professional criteria. For instance, they might not realize that a prominent nasal bridge can be visually related to a small nasal tip. The size of the nose and the chin must be properly balanced to achieve a harmonious appearance.

Ultimately, the doctor must guide the patient toward the best possible solution for their specific problem, rather than simply performing the surgery exactly as the patient initially requests.
